GoPro is releasing the Hero 9 Black action camera for a price of 480 euros. This successor to the Hero 8 Black has some improvements over its predecessor, including the possibility to replace the lens protection and a higher resolution of the sensor.
The Hero 9 Black has a new 1 / 2.3 “sensor with a resolution of 23.6 megapixels, whereas the Hero 8 has a 12-megapixel sensor. Videos can be shot in a 5k resolution and based on the video images. Individual frames can be saved as 14.7-megapixel photos. With regular photo mode, images can be made as jpeg or dng file with a resolution of 20 megapixels. In addition, the SuperPhoto function is available, where the camera automatically analyzes captured photos There is also a function that allows users to record in the buffer memory those images from fifteen or thirty seconds prior to starting the video recording.
Another innovation with the Hero 9 Black is the fact that this new model has a removable glass lens cover again. The Hero 8 Black only had a fixed cover. This was criticized, as it meant that the camera could in fact be thrown away if, for example, a star got into the lens hood from the impact of a pebble. The Hero 9 Black’s cover features Corning Gorilla Glass and, according to the manufacturer, has a flat design to prevent underwater distortion. The new camera is still waterproof up to ten meters.
The camera has a 1.4 “front screen that can display video, where the predecessors have to do without such a screen on the front. The screen is intended to make the camera more suitable for vloggers and for use as a webcam. the touch-sensitive screen on the back is sixteen percent larger compared to the predecessor. The Hero 9 Black is somewhat larger in size than the Hero 8 Black, but also has a larger battery with a capacity of 1720mAh compared to 1220mAh. it is a redesigned lithium-ion battery for the Hero 9 Black.
GoPro says the presence of HyperSmooth 3.0 means that all stabilization options are available at all resolutions and frame rates. In fact, this makes the stabilization of the Max camera available for the Hero 9 Black. Furthermore, the image can be straightened in horizontal orientation, so that this no longer has to be done in the accompanying app. For recording timelapses in combination with image stabilization, there is TimeWarp 3.0, a newer version of the function that was already in the Hero 8. This function is now also available in 4k.
The new action camera can be connected to a computer with the included USB-C cable to serve as a webcam. In addition, a resolution of 1080p can be achieved with an angle of view of 132 degrees. This webcam mode is only available for macOS; for Windows it is still in beta.
The Hero 9 Black is available in the Netherlands from September 16, for a price of 480 euros. The camera comes standard in a new carrying case / case. Later, the Max Lens Mod will also be available, for an angle of view of 155 degrees and video stabilization for 2.7k videos at 60fps.
