Take-Two Interactive, the company that publishes Grand Theft Auto, among other things, is to acquire Farmville studio Zynga for $12.7 billion – approximately 11.2 billion euros.
The companies have agreed on the acquisition. As a result, Take-Two gets its hands on one of the largest developers of smartphone games.

It is intended that Zynga will continue to maintain its own identity within Take-Two. Strauss Zelnick remains the company’s CEO. Zynga is known for games like Farmville, Golf Rival, Empires & Puzzles, Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells, and Zynga Poker. Its headquarters are located in San Francisco.

Take-Two is the parent company of 2K Games and Rockstar, and through those subsidiaries releases game franchises such as Grand Theft Auto, Borderlands, Red Dead Redemption, NBA 2K, Bioshock, and Civilization. The acquisition will give Take-Two a strong position in the smartphone games market. In addition, Take-Two can also bring its popular franchises to the mobile market through Zynga.

From the acquisition, Zynga will take over all mobile developments within Take-Two, including the T2 Mobile Games label. Take-Two previously released mobile games such as Monster Legend, Dragon City and WWE SuperCard.

Due to the amount involved in the acquisition, this is the most expensive acquisition ever in the game industry. For example, Tencent’s acquisition of SuperCell was paid $8.6 billion, and Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda was $8.1 billion.
