Whether Rihanna will follow in Adele’s footsteps this year and release another album after six years remains to be seen, but luckily there are plenty of other artists from whom we will hear new music in 2022. NU.nl lists a few album releases, including those of The Weeknd, Stromae and Dolly Parton.
The Weeknd – Dawn FM (January 7)
The first major release of 2022 will come from The Weeknd. That’s a surprise, because the Canadian superstar only announced this week that the record is coming. Abel Tesfaye, as The Weeknd is actually called, apparently does not sit still for a moment. In 2020 he released the successful album After Hours with the hits Blinding Lights and Save Your Tears and in 2021 he collaborated with artists such as Doja Cat, Swedish House Maffia, Kanye West, Rosalía and FKA twigs. Take My Breath, also released last year, now turns out to be the first single from the new album Dawn FM. On the record, The Weeknd collaborates with actor Jim Carrey, among others. The singer can be seen on the cover as an elderly man.
Aaliyah – Unstoppable (expected in January)
Fans of the R&B singer Aaliyah, who died in 2001, had to wait twenty years for her oeuvre to also be available on streaming services. Her records were offered online one by one in 2021 and now new work from her is also on the way. The single Poison was released in December, which also features The Weeknd. Fans initially didn’t react positively to the song, as Aaliyah’s vocals didn’t sound as clear as her duet partner’s. Later a new version appeared. The album Unstoppable, which consists of demos turned into full tracks under the direction of Aaliyah’s uncle Barry Hankerson, also features collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Future, Drake and Ne-Yo. A final release date has not yet been announced, but Hankerson says the album should be out in January.
Bastille – Give Me The Future (February 4)
The British band Bastille had their big break in 2013 with the hit Pompeii and since then they have released three albums and quite a few mixtapes. The band of singer Dan Smith has been working for several months towards the release of a new record, with singles such as Distorted Light Beam and Thelma + Louise. The new album is called Give Me The Future and contains thirteen songs. The album will be released on February 4.
These albums also appear:
- January 21: Years & Years – Night Call
- February 11: Alt-J – The Dream
- February 25: Tears For Fears – The Tipping Point
- March 11: Bryan Adams – So Happy It Hurts
- March 18: Charli XCX – Crash
- March 25: Placebo – Never Let Me Go
- April 8: Jack White – Fear of the Dawn
- May 27: Liam Gallagher – C’mon You Know
Eddie Vedder – Earthling (February 11)
Eddie Vedder is about to release his first solo album in 11 years. The album Earthling by the singer and guitarist of Pearl Jam will be released on February 11. The singles Long Way and The Haves can already be heard. Vedder’s most recent solo album, Ukulele Songs, dates from 2011. Since then, he has made two more albums with Pearl Jam, of which Gigaton from 2020 is the most recent.
Stromae – Multitudes (March 4)
There are artists out there who go even further than Rihanna and Adele when it comes to long radio silences between their albums. Belgian artist Stromae, known for hits such as Alors On Danse and Papaoutai, released his second and most recent album Racine Carrée in 2013. Paul van Haver, as Stromae is actually called, married, had a child and furthermore focused on his clothing line. In October he released his comeback single Santé at the same time as Adeles Easy On Me. The record became a number 1 hit in his home country and reached the top three in France. The album Multitudes will be released on March 4, with which he also hopes to go on tour. Three major performances are planned for the release, one of which is on February 27 in AFAS Live in Amsterdam.
Dolly Parton – Run Rose Run (March 7)
Dolly Parton has written a book for the first time in her life. The work Run Rose Run will be released in 2022 and the singer wrote it together with author James Patterson. The thriller is about a singer who tries to break through in Nashville in the hope that her dark past doesn’t catch up with her. Parton, known for songs like 9 to 5 and Jolene, also wrote a full album to accompany the book. The stories in the twelve original songs tie in with the story of the novel. Run Rose Run (the book and album) will be released on March 7.
A record is also expected from these artists this year:
Camila Cabello. She already announced that the record is called Familia and honors her roots.
Rosalia. The record must be Motomami and La Fama with The Weeknd being the lead single.
Swedish House Mafia. The album is called Paradise Again and features Moth To A Flame with The Weeknd.
New records are also expected from Cardi B, Ozzy Osbourne, Rammstein and Arctic Monkeys. Nothing is known about the long-awaited Rihanna album.
